Why Pregnancy Changes Veins
Pregnancy is one of the most significant risk factors for varicose veins — affecting roughly 30% of women from the first pregnancy onward. Three simultaneous physiological changes drive this:
- Progesterone relaxes smooth muscle throughout the body, including vein walls and their valves — the one-way gates that prevent blood from flowing backward
