Varicose veins develop when one-way valves inside the leg veins fail, letting blood flow backward and pool — a problem affecting about 23% of adults. The main risk factors: family history (the strongest), pregnancy, prolonged standing, age, and excess weight. Prevention helps (movement, weight control, compression when standing long hours), but established reflux is mechanical and only closing the faulty vein resolves it.
