Recovery by procedure
VenaSeal — fastest return
Day 0: walk out, normal activity. Day 1: work, driving, light exercise. No compression stockings and no tumescent anesthesia. In the VeClose trial (2017), adhesive closure matched RFA for effectiveness with faster recovery. Sport: a few days; see our guide to returning to sport after VenaSeal.
Sclerotherapy — sessions with stockings
Day 0: walk immediately, desk work same day. Compression stockings 1–2 weeks. Bruising fades over 2–4 weeks; several sessions are typical for spider veins. Gym: ~1 week; swimming after injection sites heal.
EVLA (laser) — mild soreness mid-week
Day 0–1: walking encouraged, desk work next day. Compression ~1–2 weeks. Expect a pulling or mild soreness around day 3–5 as the treated vein closes (J Vasc Surg 2019 series report high closure rates with quick return to activity). Gym: 1–2 weeks; flights: short flights ~1 week, long-haul ~2 weeks.
RFA (radiofrequency) — similar to EVLA, less bruising
Same-day walking, desk work next day, compression ~1 week, typically less bruising and post-procedure soreness than laser. Gym: 1–2 weeks.
